About Kilohana Plantation
As you enter the 16,000 square foot home, there are paintings of Ethel and Gaylord Parke Wilcox who built the home in 1935. Furnishings were purchased from Gump's of San Francisco, and the lumber was shipped from the west coast. Beautiful pine wainscoting and ceilings grace the living room, hallways and library. Designed by renowned British architect, Mark Potter, the home was unusually modern for its time.
Each of the seven bedrooms had a private bathroom, there was an elevator to the second floor and an intercom system. Mrs. Wilcox enjoyed the California designs she had observed on visits to the mainland and Kilohana reflects that influence in the Tudor style home.
Kilohana sits in the middle of 35 acres of pasture, manicured grounds, gardens and natural growth. As you leave Lihue heading southwest on highway 50, look to your right and you will see Kilohana across the pasture where four gentle Clydesdales, a donkey and other animals graze. The curving driveway leads to the front door of the home and beyond to the parking area. Most days you will see one of two horse drawn carriages waiting in front of the house.
Kilohana is also home to some Kauai's most celebrated art galleries, a tribute to the collections of the Wilcox family. Works by world-renowned artists from Kauai, the Pacific Basin and the Orient are featured. From distinctive jewelry, clothing and antiques to handcrafted Hawaiian gifts, you'll find that the shops at Kilohana offer an intimate atmosphere and unique selection of quality items that is unmatched anywhere else on the island.
Located throughout both levels of the house as well as the estate grounds, the shops are nestled in beautifully restored rooms and quaint guest cottages.
Select retail shops are housed in the main house. Many of them feature quality "Kauai Made" products. In the wood-panelled library are examples of some of the finest Hawaiian art and beautifully crafted collectibles. The cloak room is filled with Niihau shell necklaces, rare coins, scrimshaw, stamps and Monarchy documents.
The nursery offers gifts and crafts from skilled local artisans. In bedrooms on the upper floor are shops featuring jewelry, beautiful shells marine treasures and collectible dolls. The master bedroom is a gallery of leading Hawaii artists. The guest cottage offers tropical and Hawaiian attire and household textiles. Next door in the greenhouse, visitors may create pottery or purchase the artist's selections.
